icddr,b honours contribution by (Late) Dr M Mujibur Rahaman

Dhaka, 15 May 2017 -As in previous years, today, the annual memorial lecture was held at icddr,b’s Sasakawa auditorium as a mark of respect to Late Dr M Mujibur Rahaman, former Associate Director of icddr,b. Dr Rahman is one of the founding fathers of icddr,b and fondly remembered for his contributions to the institute and during Bangladesh’s War of Liberation.

This year Prof. (Dr) Syed Modasser Ali, former Advisor to the Hon’ble Prime Minister of Bangladesh, & Chairman, Bangladesh Medical Research Council (BMRC), kindly consented to give the Memorial Lecture.

During the event icddr,b’s Executive Director Dr John D Clemens welcomed the audience by saying, ‘Dr Rahman was one of the icons of icddr,b. He conducted research which was very much ahead of its time. We are where we are because we have the privilege of standing on the shoulders of public health giants like Mujibur Rahaman ’.

In his lecture Prof. (Dr) Syed Modasser Ali highlighted several of Dr Mujibur Rahaman’s contributions and his role in the independence war of Bangladesh. He said:

‘Dr Rahaman was not only an outstanding pro people researcher but also played a significant role in the liberation war of Bangladesh. His work is still relevant to the present day public health problems.’

Dr Ali also highlighted his vision for icddr,b to move ahead with its mission of solving public health challenges through innovative scientific research.

Syed Monjurul Islam, Deputy Executive Director of icddr,b, and several senior icddr,b staff were also present at the event.
