Science and innovation celebrated on icddr,b Day

Dhaka, 30 March 2017 - Today, icddr,b showcased its latest innovations and ground breaking research findings by celebrating  science and innovation at its  ‘icddr,b Day’. icddr,b’s international donor countries including UK, Canada, Sweden and Bangladesh also participated to celebrate the work done by icddr,b to improve public health, not only in Bangladesh, but globally.

Dr Richard Smith, Chair of the icddr,b Trustee Board welcomed the distinguished guests and highlighted the contribution of the chief guest in establishing icddr,b in the sixties and seventies.  

During the event icddr,b’s Executive Director Professor John D Clemens presented the contribution of the institute in solving key public health problems through innovative scientific research and innovation.

Mr. Abul Maal A. Muhith, MP, Honourable Minister, Ministry of Finance, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh was the Chief Guest of the event. Highlighting the impact icddr,b has had over the years, Mr Muhith said: “I believe icddr,b played a very important role in mobilising resources against death. It is a first class international research institution in this country. When we established other international institutions later on, it served as a model.”

British High Commissioner H.E. Alison Blake, Canadian High Commissioner H.E. Benoît-Pierre Laramée and Swedish Embassy’s Deputy Head of Mission & Head of Development Cooperation Anders Öhrström were among the invited guests.

Illustrating the historical ties between the UK and icddr,b, the British High Commissioner Alison Blake said: “The UK Government is working with icddr,b, creating shared goals, working towards the SDGs. The UK recognises that public health research lies at the base of creating a healthier future for all – leaving no one behind.”

One of the highlights of the day was a cultural programme by Ms. Momotaz Begom, Honourable MP of Bangladesh government and a popular folk music singer.
