About the Program

Biosafety Office at the International Center for Diarrhoeal Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b) has developed its Biosafety & Biosecurity Program to ensure safety of the individuals working in research and diagnostic laboratories and to protect the environment. The program strives to ensure the biological safety and security of all individuals, resources, information, and biological agents. Biosafety Office is involve in developing biosafety policy, issuing guidance, communicating training requirements and initiating training programs as well as working closely and coordinating with other government and non-government institutes regarding biosafety and biosecurity. The benefit envisioned by the program is that it will create a solid understanding and knowledge on biosafety and biosecurity, generate laboratory skills, and ultimately help to motivate and apply biosafety principals and practice in research and diagnostic activities.

Biosafety Office, working in collaboration with Technical Training Unit at icddr,b has been offering the following orientation and training courses:

Course Description: Orientation

Orientation courses are day long and to be held in four sessions March, June, September, and December. For any further information regarding participation in this courses contact with course coordinator.

Date: 8 December  9:00 am to 4:00 pm

Target group: This course is suitable for both internal and external participants. The course particularly designed for the laboratory technicians working in research and diagnostic laboratories and will be offered in dual language (Bengali and English).

Course content:Scientists have traditionally adopted sound laboratory practices directed at assuring the quality of their data is termed Good Laboratory Practices (GLP). This course will introduce the major elements of GLP and create the realization that there is no margin for error and one must follow good practices in the laboratory to generate accurate, precise and reliable data. All the safety issues in a microbiological or biomedical research/diagnostic laboratory will also be introduced along with the GLP in this course.

O3: Biosafety for Engineers and Maintenance Personal

Date: TBD 11:00 am to 4:00 pm,

Target group: This course is particularly designed for the engineers and maintenance personals providing support and service in Microbiological and Biomedical Research and Diagnostic Laboratories.

Course content: The course includes basic understanding about Biosafety & Biosecurity for engineers and service personals and safe maintenance of laboratories for research and diagnostics.

O4: Biohazard Control at Hospital Facilities

Date: TBD

Target group: This course is particularly designed for the health service providers, doctors and nurses, at hospital facilities.

Course content:Course particularly includes introduction to biohazard, biohazard control, the concept of hospital isolation room particularly the negative pressure room and its use, different precautions and requirement of PPE for working in a negative pressure room, and infectious waste management.

O5: Bloodborne Pathogen Standard & Exposure Control Plan

Date: 22 December 11:00 am to 4:00 pm

Target group: This course is designed for the workers working in sample reception area of diagnostic laboratories or blood bank.

Course content:This course covers orientation on the Bloodborne pathogens, standards and guidelines, and exposure control plan and post exposure prophylaxis.

Course Description: Training

Date:14-20 October 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

All training courses to be held in two sessions, first session is in April and the second session in October. The whole training program divided in two packages. Package 1 is the Laboratory Safety training program including five courses T1-T5 and a seminar session, which is all together, 3 days long.Upon successful completion of these courses an individual will understand all the laboratory safety issues and their management. Package 2 constitutes the theoretical and the hands on training on how to work safety in a BSL3 laboratory, which is 2 days long. Individuals interested to take package 2 must have participated in courses (T1-T5) included package 1. For any further information regarding participation in this courses contact with course coordinator.
