icddr,b’s Response to the Ongoing Massive Diarrhoea Outbreak in Dhaka and Matlab

icddr,b has been providing treatment to a record number of diarrhoea patients from the second week of March. Daily patient count for Dhaka Hospital exceeded 1,300 per day. From 1 March till 10 April 2022, Dhaka Hospital treated more than 42,000 patients, and Matlab Hospital treated over 8,300 patients.

Celebrating six decades of scientific research, saving millions of lives globally

This year marks a major milestone in the history of icddr,b. Sixty years ago, at the onset of a major cholera pandemic, the then-South East Asian Treaty Organization (SEATO) established a small laboratory in Dhaka named Cholera Research Laboratory to be operated under National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA.

As per the requirement of the Global Fund, the grant application needs to be open to professionals for feedback. icddr,b is one of the Principal Recipients (PR) of this application along with AIDS/STD Programme (ASP) and Save the Children International (SCI). Dr Md Abdur Razzak, Minister of Agriculture, Bangladesh visited icddr,b on 22 September 2019.

Dr Razzak met with the senior leadership team, and toured the Dhaka hospital and laboratories. Dr Razzak was not only impressed by the world class research labs at icddr,b but also the organisation’s dedicated and talented workforce. He said “icddr,b is doing a highly commendable job. We would like to collaborate with this institution to help set-up an international standard lab for the Ministry of Agriculture. We want our staff to have hands-on training here at icddr,b".
