“I would like my research findings implemented at the regional and global level to improve the nutritional status of women and children.”
I have a broad background in public health, with specific training and expertise in qualitative and quantitative research, systematic review and meta-analysis on maternal and child malnutrition. My research interest focuses on the role of nutrition influencing maternal, infant and child health, survival, growth and development in low and middle-income countries. Currently, I am evaluating a large scale, market-based, nationwide rollout of Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation (MMS) in Bangladesh. I have played an active role in developing the ‘Stunting platform’ in collaboration with the Global Health Department, University of Washington, USA under which several protocols/proposals and manuscripts have been developed. I have successfully published 23 research articles in peer-reviewed journals. I also documented the effectiveness of various intervention models for anaemia reduction in female garments workers at their workplace which informed the Government, policymakers, donors, factory owners, and female garment workers about the benefits of nutrition interventions and advocated for the inclusion of appropriate nutrition intervention packages in the workplace in garment factories of Bangladesh.
Besides that, my research projects and publication addressed the fact that in most settings, a combination of interventions directly targeting health and nutrition outcomes and social safety nets appear most successful in reducing childhood stunting in lower-middle-income countries. My research evidence has guided the regional and local Government, policymakers, donors, and academia to formulate policies to prevent and treat severely malnourished children.Â
As a recognition of my dedication to public health research, I received the “Dr. Asma Islam Gold Medal Memorial Award” as a “Best Performer of the Year in Research Category” on January 31, 2016, from icddr,b. Recently I have joined as a member in icddr,b’s “Ethical Review Committee”. I am an active member of the Global Burden of Disease Collaborator Network since 2016. I am a faculty member of the Master of Public Health (MPH) Course 670: Public Health Nutrition for James P. Grant School of Public Health, BRAC University since 2012. Currently I am also pursuing a PhD at Tampere University in Finland.
Why work at icddr,b:
icddr,b have given me the opportunity and platform to conduct “world-class research” and create regional and global evidence for improving maternal and child nutrition.
Future plans:
To generate simple clinical and programmatic evidence that could influence the clinicians, researchers, and policymakers to formulate regional and global policies for improving the nutritional status of women and children.Â
