“I want to explore the link between gut health and malnutrition and discover impactful solutions aimed at improving gut health, reducing enteropathies and addressing the global burden of malnutrition.”
I am a clinician and researcher aimed at contributing to the field of gut enteropathy and maternal and childhood malnutrition through community-based and clinical research. I commenced my research career as a research physician in the Bangladesh Environmental Enteric Dysfunction (BEED) study, which was aimed at validating potential non-invasive biomarkers of a condition known as environmental enteric dysfunction, a sub-clinical infection of the gut which is believed to be a major cause of chronic malnutrition or stunting. Since then, my research has focused on gut health and enteropathy and its association with malnutrition and growth. As an Associate Scientist, I am leading several studies as the Principal Investigator related to gut health, enteropathy, and malnutrition. I am involved in projects aiming to evaluate the transmission of gut microbiota from mother to child and explore the complex biological mechanism of inter-generational malnutrition. This includes evaluating the impact of interventions to improve maternal gut health during pregnancy through microbiota-directed complementary foods and subsequent vertical transmission of the beneficial microbiota to the offspring. I am also involved in projects exploring antibiotic responsiveness and resistance in certain gut infections like enteric fever, exploring the pathophysiology of poorly defined GI diseases like functional dyspepsia, eradication of H. pylori infection, etc.Â
Why I work at icddr,b:
I believe the research atmosphere at icddr,b is the best platform to flourish my research potential, paving the way for me to contribute to innovations that will impact improving global health.Â
Future Plans:
I want to explore the link between gut health and malnutrition, both undernutrition and obesity and discover effective inventions aimed at improving gut health, reducing enteropathies, and addressing the global burden of malnutrition. I am also keen to collaborate with scientists and research organisations across the globe to contribute to improving global health.Â
