“My work on hospital-based influenza surveillance generates critical information on circulating influenza viruses in Bangladesh, which are crucial in selecting strains for annual influenza vaccinations globally.”

I am originally from a clinical background but have always dreamt of contributing to improving human life on a more pronounced scale. Following my MPH degree, I acquired the necessary skills to be a medical epidemiologist and work in the Programme for Emerging Infections under the Infectious Disease Division of icddr,b. I specialize in epidemiological studies related to respiratory viruses (influenza and now SARS-CoV-2) and their pandemic preparedness. I have been engaged in studies to estimate the influenza disease burden among the priority groups for influenza vaccination identified by the World Health Organization. I have also conducted studies focusing on acute myocardial infarctions resulting from infectious diseases like influenza and SARS-CoV-2 and clinical trials on influenza vaccine effectiveness in Bangladesh.

Why I work in icddr,b:

icddr,b provides me with the platform to exercise my skills in generating critical data that leads to interventions that holistically improve lives and well-being. I have been supported with every element necessary to conduct public health research efficiently and effectively.

Future plans:

I intend to continue investigating studies, especially clinical trials focusing on influenza and other respiratory viruses like SARS-CoV-2 prevention and control measures in Bangladesh, which have the potential to be adopted by other countries worldwide.
