Parliamentary TB Caucus by USAID’s ACTB initiated on World TB Day

On 24 March 2022, The Honourable Speaker of Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, MP, formally launched Bangladesh’s first Parliamentary Caucus on Tuberculosis (TB). The Caucus is formed as part of a special World TB Day event held at the LD Hall. This platform aims to mobilise internal resources and prioritise TB prevention and treatment programmes at the legislative level.

Dr Tahmeed Ahmed, Executive Director, icddr,b in his welcome address emphasised on the prevention of this communicable disease and described how parliamentarians could play an important  role towards this end.

“The United States and the American people continue to stand with Bangladesh to eliminate tuberculosis and to achieve our shared vision of a brighter, healthier, and more prosperous future for all Bangladeshis,” said U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Helen LaFave, who attended there.

Dr Shirin Sharmin said, “To address the TB issues, we need to identify the causes that are affecting the elimination of the disease, and how to overcome these barriers.”

Among others,  Prof. Dr A.F.M. Ruhal Haque, MP, Member, Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Health and Family Welfare; Prof. Dr Pran Gopal Datta, MP; Ms. Aroma Dutta, MP; Mr. Shykh Seraj, Eminent Media Personality; and Dr Firdausi Qadri, Senior Scientist, icddr,b, delivered their speech. Twenty other MPs, as well as representatives from USAID, Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad, icddr,b and media also joined the event.
