One-Stop TB Service Center at 250 Bedded TB Hospital at Shyamoli, Dhaka

Dhaka, 15 March 2021— To improve access TB services for all forms of tuberculosis (TB), USAID’s Alliance for Combating TB in Bangladesh (ACTB) Activity, in collaboration with USAID’s Infectious Diseases Detection and Surveillance (IDDS) project, is supporting the National Tuberculosis Control Programme (NTP) to establish a One-Stop TB Service Center  at 250 Bedded TB Hospital, Shyamoli, Dhaka. An orientation workshop was held on 14 March 2021 as part of that process. 

With a well-equipped laboratory and TB/multidrug-resistant TB wards, the Center will form linkages with specialist doctors and other public and private hospitals/diagnostic centers, private practitioners for all forms of TB diagnosis and treatment. The Center will also act as a knowledge hub for TB related training and education.

Professor Dr Abul Bashar Mohammad Khurshid Alam, Director General (Health), Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) was the Chief Guest of the event. The Chair of the event was Professor (Dr.) Md. Shamiul Islam, Director, MBDC and LD, TB-L & ASP, DGHS. Dr Md Abu Raihan, Deputy Director, 250 Bedded TB Hospital, Shyamoli, Dhaka was the co-chair of the event. Among other special guests were Professor Syed Shafi Ahmed, Director, Dhaka Shishu (Children) Hospital; Professor Dr Md. Mizanur Rahman, Director, National Institute of Kidney Diseases and Urology (NIKDU); Dr Md Belal Hossain, Divisional Director (Health), Dhaka; Dr Md Abul Kalam, GHSA specialist USAID; Dr Sayera Banu, Senior Scientist and Head, Programme for Emerging Infections of icddr,b. Other government and non-government officials also joined the event.

At the event Professor Dr Abul Bashar Mohammad Khurshid Alam, Director General (Health), DGHS, MoHFW said, NTP will develop a detailed plan for better utilization of the hospital as an effective One-Stop TB Service Center.

The Co-Chair Dr Md Abu Raihan, Deputy Director, 250 Bedded TB Hospital, Shyamoli, Dhaka welcomed the idea of the One-Stop TB Service Center at the facility and emphasized how the hospital will collaborate to make it as a center of excellence for other facilities in the country.

At the event, Dr Md. Abul Kalam, USAID/Bangladesh Global Health Specialist highlighted USAID’s commitment over the years in the country’s efforts to fight TB.

Dr Sayera Banu, Senior Scientist and Head, Programme for Emerging Infections of icddr,b said, there are challenges in the TB field. With concerted efforts of all the parties, we are trying to solve the problems and learn from them as well.

Over the next few months, USAID’s ACTB will establish eight other one-stop service centers for TB across the country.
