“I want to contribute in creating a sustainable model for the Early Childhood Development programme and the development of underprivileged children by scaling up the programme nationwide."

I always had the urge to work for an international organisation in my university days. After graduation I joined the Child Development Center under the Child Development and Child Neurology unit of Dhaka Shishu Hospital as a voluntary psychologist. While working at the Shishu Hospital, I was going through the job circular of icddr,b  and fortunately found an opening. My journey at icddr,b started as a Research Assistant in a child development group under the Clinical Sciences Division in 2001. Currently I am working as a Research Investigator in the Maternal and Child Health Division (MCHD).

My area of research interest is mostly focused on cognitive, language, motor and socio-emotional development of children in their first 5 years of life, which is often considered as a crucial and, to some extent, most vulnerable period in physical, motor, linguistic and psychological wellbeing in a child’s life.  I gained first-rate skills in piloting and adapting different psychological tools, supervising and monitoring field-based data collection, writing proposals on Early Childhood Development (ECD) related to psychosocial stimulation, scaling up, maternal mental health, analysing child development-related data, etc. I was involved in several early childhood development programmes integrated with the Primary Health Service under the Ministry of Health and Family Planning (MoHFW), where Government frontline health workers have delivered the intervention at the Community Clinic. I have working experience in the international context having imparted training on psychosocial stimulation intervention to the staff members of PRATHAM, a reputed non-government organisation in India. In addition, I have worked with several national and international NGOs and government stakeholders of relevant ministries. I have completed one project in capacity of a Principle Investigator and several projects as a Co-Principle Investigator or a Co-Investigator.

Why I work at icddrb:

I have a strong inclination to develop my career as a Public Health Researcher and there would have been be no place better than icddr,b. The center created a path to comprehensive research in the ECD field for me, giving me all the support I needed to flourish as a researcher. I am proud to be a member of icddr,b, where I have gained practical experience and skills in quantitative research methodology and program management. icddr,b has given me the opportunity to utilise my education and research skills in the relevant field and also provided me with the chance to thrive and acquire extensive research and professional experience in the early child development field.

Future Plan:

I want to continue my career as an independent researcher and further hone my skills in implementation research. I still believe that I have more to learn and I do possess the potential to be a better researcher in the field of child development.  I always look for expanding my horizon and would love to work in diverse settings and learn new dimensions in this field.
