Dr Mustafa Mahfuz is a medical graduate with an MPH and a PhD in Pediatrics. He is currently working as a Scientist in the Nutrition Research Division of icddr,b. For the last 15 years of his research career at icddr,b, he has been working on different research projects on childhood stunting, severe acute malnutrition, environmental enteric dysfunction (EED), malnutrition-infection interaction, the long-term effect of aflatoxin exposure in children, maternal undernutrition, and the effect of gut microbiota on childhood and maternal undernutrition. Regarding his contribution to science, he tested an intervention package to reduce childhood stunting in urban slums and examined the association between aflatoxin exposure and its association with childhood stunting and cognitive and language development. He has been working on identifying the biomarkers, histologic characterization, and pathophysiology of childhood and maternal EED and currently leading a multi-country analysis to examine the association between the biomarkers of EED with the histology features in children with undernutrition. At present, he is also leading a research project in the slums of Dhaka to develop a nutrition service delivery platform for pregnant women, adolescent girls, and under 2 years old children. So far he has published 146 scientific papers in peer-reviewed Journals. He is a member of the Environmental Enteric Dysfunction Biopsy Initiative Consortium formed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and a member of the childhood risk stratification working group of the World Health Organization. He is an editorial board member of the journal “Scientific Reports” of Nature and also worked as an associate scientific advisor for the Science Translational Medicine (STM). According to Web of Science (Web of Science Researcher ID: H-5923-2017), his Hirsch index is 31 (https://www.webofscience.com/wos/author/record/37616).
