"I feel proud that my work in the virology lab on SARS-CoV-2 has led me to contribute as a front line worker during the COVID-19 pandemic."
I started my career at Virology Laboratory, icddr,b as a Research Officer during the Influenza pandemic in 2009. At that time, I worked on molecular detection and genetic characterisation of respiratory viruses, such as influenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus, human parainfluenza virus, human metapneumovirus, adenovirus, rhinovirus, and nipah virus. I secured my PhD in 2020 when I explored the genetic spectrum and metabolic profiling of congenital hypothyroid children using real-time PCR, Sanger sequencing, and LC-MS/MS techniques, followed by molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations. Currently, I am working as a Research Investigator and extensively involved in COVID-19 activities at icddr,b. I worked for the nationwide testing capacity building and visited more than 30 district-level medical colleges and hospitals to train the Medical Doctors and Medical Technologists on COVID-19 detection using real-time PCR, maintaining biosafety issues. I am also coordinating several ongoing projects on SARS-CoV-2, such as COVID-19 genomic surveillance, the impact of variants on clinical outcomes, and evaluation of SARS-CoV-2 rapid antigen test.
Why I work at icddr,b:
I am a part of a really supportive team of the Virology family – the best I’ve been working with. Every day, I feel that I’m not going to work, I’m going to see my second family. We share the same ethos and mentality, and we encourage each other to do our best for public health solutions.
Future Plans:
I love being in my role and am looking forward to progressing as far as I can in the field of Virology. I would focus on tracking the emerging respiratory pathogens that might cause future pandemics.
2020 - till date
Research Investigator, Virology Laboratory, icddr,b
2016 - 2020
PhD in Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Dhaka & ideSHi
2013 - 2016
Senior Research Officer, Virology Laboratory, icddr,b
2009 - 2013
Research Officer, Virology Laboratory, icddr,b
2009
MS in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, University of Dhaka
2008
BSc in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, University of Dhaka
My research interest focuses on investigating the viral etiology associated with respiratory illness by applying molecular and immunological platforms. Moreover, I am also interested in vaccine and drug trials for emerging pathogens.
